There’s an Alabama Thrift Store Where You Can Buy People’s Unclaimed Luggage

The Unclaimed Baggage Center in Scottsboro, Alabama, is not your average thrift store: They only sell items from lost airline baggage. The 49-year-old store receives about 7,000 new items per day from airports all across the country, usually after it’s been unclaimed for 90 days. Unclaimed Baggage operates like a typical Goodwill or Salvation Army, with bargains to be had on clothing, electronics, jewelry, and shoes. The store also documents some of its more interesting finds on its website, including a puppet from the Jim Henson-David Bowie movie Labyrinth, a cured zebra skin and a Tibetan dung-chen horn. Says one Yelp reviewer, “Even if you don’t purchase anything, it is still an adventure going through all the misfit items someone left behind.”
