The New York Attorney General’s office has ordered televangelist Jim Bakker to stop selling a fake coronavirus cure, according to Deadline. In a cease-and-desist letter sent Thursday, the Chief of the Health Care Bureau, Lisa Landau, mentioned a February 12 episode of his show. During that show, there were claims that Bakker’s Silver Solution could eliminate the coronavirus. Bakker asked guest, naturopath Sherill Sellman, if the Silver Solution would work against it. “Let’s say it hasn’t been tested on this strain of the coronavirus, but it’s been tested on other strains of the coronavirus and has been able to eliminate it within 12 hours,” she replied. The show was later discussed on John Oliver’s HBO show, Last Week Tonight. “Any representation on the Jim Bakker Show that its Silver Solution products are effective at combating and/or treating the 2019 novel coronavirus violates New York law.” said Landau. She also demanded a disclaimer be placed on Bakker’s website. This isn’t Bakker’s first run-in with the law; he has already served time in federal prison for fraud. The show has 10 days to comply with the letter. The Silver Solution Product costs $125.
