The I-94/Hwy 27/CR 45/46 interchange near Alexandria will close to all traffic May 15th – Mid July for construction. Depending on direction of travel motorists will use I 94 as part of the detour avoiding exit 100. Two roundabouts will be constructed at the interchange for the eastbound and westbound ramps.
Project details
The Minnesota Department of Transportation, in partnership with Douglas County, will be constructing roundabouts at the eastbound and westbound ramps at the Interstate 94 and Highway 27/County Road 45/46 interchange. These projects will improve safety and efficiency along the I-94/Highway 27/County Road 46 corridors, which connect multiple commercial businesses and local traffic to I-94 and serve as important connector routes for Alexandria. The improvements will enhance traffic performance, mobility and driver satisfaction at the Hwy 27 & Interstate 94 interchange.
MnDOT completed a study in 2019 that analyzed potential roadway improvements to mitigate issues identified by local stakeholders, Douglas County staff and MnDOT staff. For more information about the County project, please contact Douglas County Public Works.
Traffic impacts
Starting May 15, the Highway 27/County Road 45/46 interchange will close to all traffic for the construction of the roundabouts at the eastbound and westbound I-94 ramps.
Business/residential access:
All work will be isolated to the interchange ramps, so residents, businesses and visitors will be able to access driveways/entrances on Highway 27 and County Roads 45/46 up to the work zone.
Detours:
The interchange will be closed. Depending on direction of travel, motorists will use Interstate 94 as part of their detour route to/from Highway 27 or CR 46.
- To Highway 27 westbound: From I-94, use Exit 97 for Highway 114 south to Highway 27
- To County Road 46: From I-94, use Exit 103 for Highway 29 north on Broadway to County Road 46/34th Avenue. This is the route trucks will take to access the Pilot Travel Center.
- To County Road 45: Take County Road 46 to Nevada Street and Latoka Lane SW
Other area projects motorists should be aware of:
- Westbound I-94 concrete resurfacing (MnDOT): Lane closures, crossovers and head-to-head traffic on I-94 between Brandon and Alexandria. Starts in July.
- County Road 45/82 roundabout (Douglas County project): Check with Douglas County on timing, detours and project communication.
