Alexandria saw a surge in new buildings during the last year despite the pandemic. 535 building permits were awarded for projects valued at over $65 million dollars, a 35% increase compared to 2019. One new building is the UPS distribution center near target valued at $3.2 million.
There was also a surge in affordable housing. The Runestone apartments off of birch avenue had filled up it’s 34 units in 65 days. DW Jones is asking the state for tax credits towards another apartment building like it to be completed in 2023.
Another building designer called Rise Modular has plans of “lego-like” modular homes that will help with local homelessness. The city council recently approved their plans after being quite impressed with the design and fast construction.
