Former Lt. Gov. Michelle Fischbach announced this week that she plans to run for the 7th Congressional District seat held for the past 30 years by U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson. Fischbach, a Republican, served as lieutenant governor after Tina Smith was chosen to replace Al Franken in the U.S. Senate. Prior to serving as lieutenant governor, she served in the Minnesota Senate. Political analyst Steven Schier says that resume makes Fischbach a formidable challenger to Peterson. President Donald Trump won 61 percent of the 7th District vote in 2016, while Peterson won 52 percent in a five-point win over Republican Dave Hughes.
