Fully Restored 1965 Ford Mustang Sells for Record-Setting $3.85M

A fully restored 1965 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R–a model known as the “Flying Mustang”–recently sold for a record-setting $3.85 million at auction. Mecum Auctions in Indianapolis called the car “the most historically important Shelby Mustang in the world” as well as “arguably the most important Mustang in the history of the marque, period.” The car was driven by Ken Miles (portrayed by Christian Bale in the 2019 film Ford v Ferrari), and was the first Shelby R-Model competition car built as well as the first one to win a race. The cream-colored Mustang fetched a slightly higher price than the 1968 Mustang featured in the Steve McQueen film Bullitt, which recently sold for $3.74 million. The purchaser of the Flying Mustang wasn’t revealed.
