Couple Who Paid $120K for a Banana Duct-Taped to a Wall Believe It Is the “Unicorn of the Art World”

Recently, a couple who spent $120,000 on a banana duct-taped to a white wall called it the “unicorn of the art world” and believe it will one day be iconic, according to the Associated Press. Billy and Beatrice Cox bought the banana piece, called “Comedian” by artist Maurizio Cattelan, at the Art Basel exhibition in Miami, Florida. “We are acutely aware of the blatant absurdity of the fact that ‘Comedian’ is an otherwise inexpensive and perishable piece of produce and a couple inches of duct tape,” they say. “We sense that Cattelan’s banana will become an iconic historical object.” One day, the Coxes plan to gift the piece to a museum. Social media users found all of this hilarious; model Brooke Shields even taped a banana to her forehead, writing “an expensive selfie,” on Instagram.

The internet is also having a few laughs about the art, Nik Knight even made her own version of the piece.
