Authorities say a 9-year-old girl suffered serious injuries after a rollover involving an ATV in Stearns County near Freeport. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office said 11-year-old Ava Smith of Melrose was operating an ATV in a driveway Saturday morning when she attempted to maneuver a curve and lost control. The 9-year-old passenger, Eve Shaw of Freeport was thrown from the ATV. The sheriff’s office said Eve was not wearing a seat belt at the time. She was taken to Melrose Hospital and later flown to a hospital in the Twin Cities with life-threatening injuries. Ava Smith, the driver, was wearing a seat belt. She suffered minor injuries. Speed is believed to be a factor. The crash remains under investigation.
