Arrest Made In Duluth Synagogue Fire, Hate Crime Not Suspected

Authorities say a fire that destroyed a historic Duluth synagogue in  doesn’t appear to have been a hate crime. Duluth Police Chief Mike Tusken said Sunday that 36-year-old Matthew James Amiot, of Duluth, was arrested Friday in the fire last Monday at the Adas Israel Congregation. Tusken says he has no reason to believe the fire was a hate crime, although the investigation remains open. The investigation interviewed witnesses and looked at surveillance video which led to Amiot as a suspect.Police are recommending prosecutors charge Amiot with first-degree arson.
