The Great Minnesota Get-Together began its 12-day run today in Falcon Heights. What began in 1854 as a territorial fair to highlight agriculture and encourage farming in the region became the Minnesota State Fair in 1859, a year after Minnesota was granted statehood. From humble beginnings, the fair now attracts more than 2 million guests annually and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region. Last year, the state fair set an attendance record, with a cumulative attendance of 2,046,533 people, according to fair officials. Every year there is much new to see and to enjoy. Fair officials say there will be 31 new foods and seven new food vendors this year. The Great Minnesota Get Together runs thru Labor Day.
